NOTES:
Clean plastics, tin, bi-metal cans and glass of all colors may be put together in a reusable container.

On alternate weeks, mixed paper, magazines, junk mail, office paper, catalogues etc. can be placed in a plastic reusable container or brown paper bag. Magazines, Office Paper, mail should be bundled separately and tied with string, placed in a paper grocery bag (no plastic bags) or a sturdy reusable container.

Newspapers should still be separated and placed in paper bags or reusable container. Cardboard must be flattened, bundled and tied with only string or paper tape, or placed in a sturdy reusable container. Cardboard will be picked up at curbside on the same day as all other paper.

Regular garbage found to have recyclable materials in it will not be collected.

WHAT YOU CAN RECYCLE:
Clean glass, plastic, aluminum, steel, tin and bi-metal cans:
Glass no longer needs to be color separated. Any plastic container with a neck (milk, soda, water, laundry detergent, etc.) can be recycled. These all should all be empty, rinsed clean and placed in a single container that may not exceed 35 gallons in capacity. You do not need to remove labels. Any plastic similar to frozen dinner trays, margarine tubs and sour cream containers should be disposed of in your regular trash, as should metal and plastic bottle tops, lids and sprayer attachments. Do not put ceramics, dishes, drinking glasses, mirrors, window pain glass or light bulbs in with your recyclables.

Newspaper:
Black and white newspaper should be separated from all other paper and tied with string, placed in a paper grocery bag (remove the plastic “carry handle” bags and dispose of them in regular garbage) or a sturdy reusable container.

Magazines, Office Paper, Mail:

Should be bundled separately and tied with string, placed in a paper grocery bag (no plastic bags) or a sturdy reusable container.

Cardboard:
Must be flattened, placed in a paper grocery bag, bundled and tied with only string or paper tape, or placed in a sturdy reusable container. Cardboard will be picked up at curbside on the same day as all other paper.

Refrigerants:
Refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers or any items containing refrigerants, such as Freon, require a special pick-up in compliance with the Federal Clean Air Act. Residents must call Suburban Disposal, Inc. (973) 227-7020 to schedule an appointment for a collection date.
Do not place item(s) at the curb until the evening prior to the date given by the refuse contractor or after 6:00 a.m. the morning of collection. Refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed. One refrigerator or freezer or two air conditioners or dehumidifiers are permitted per collection.

Leaf Collection:
October 1st to December 10th is the only time that leaves can be raked into the street. There will be multiple collections of leaves throughout the Township during this period on a varying schedule. Leaves are collected in paper bags at curbside only between Oct 1st and Dec 31st and again between March 1st and May 31st. There is no need to call to arrange collection during these dates. At all other times, you must call the Department of Public Works to schedule leaf pick-up. Plastic leaf bags will not be picked up - you may bring them to the Recycling Center and empty them there. Paper bags are available at Township Hall, the Public Works Department and at the Recycling Center. The fee is 5 for $1. It is your responsibility to notify your landscaper of these requirements.

Lawn/Garden Debris:

This debris is collected in limited quantities with household garbage. Grass and small hedge clippings must be placed in plastic bags or garbage containers weighing less than 50 pounds each. Small branches, bushes and small shrubs must be tied in bundles cut in 4 feet lengths and weighing less than 50 pounds each. Large branches and tree limbs are not permitted in refuse collection but may be brought to the Recycling Center or disposed of privately. Residents are encouraged to take vegetative waste to the Recycling Center.

Automotive:
Separated tires and rims may be brought to the Recycling Center or disposed of privately. Waste motor oil may be brought to the Department of Public Works during working hours. Auto parts must be disposed of privately.

Hazardous Waste:
Hazardous household chemicals may be brought to the Essex County Household Hazardous Waste Days scheduled in spring and fall to be announced. Computers are also accepted during these dates.
