In late August, President Clinton announced the formation of the White House Millennium initiative which is aimed at planning for the year 2000 and beyond. In strong glowing terms,President Clinton challenged communities like West Orange to become Millennium Communities with funding and other resources to be provided from the national government. "We're already out front in this initiative. It is great to see the President and the national government learning from West Orange. As everyone should be aware, West Orange began its 2000 Commission in the fall of 1996 and is already on the way to a broad grassroots inclusive celebration in the year 2000 and beyond," said Richard D. Trenk, Chair of West Orange 2000. In his 1996 successful campaign for Council, John Skarbnbik promoted the concept of all West Orange residents coming together to look at where our town is and where it is going in the year 2000 and beyond. "West Orange 2000 has tremendous potential for our entire community. Over 175 people have already volunteered their time, resources and creativity towards improving West Orange on all levels," said Councilman John Skarbnik. After the seven Commissioners met for nearly six months,West Orange 2000 had its kick-off in May at the elegent Highlawn Pavillion. Thereafter , in late June all of the committies met at the West Orange High School. Over the summer the five subcommitties have continued their efforts at planning their activities. The five subcommittees are the West Orange Celebrates the new Milllenium Committee, West Orange Works Committee, Welcome to West Orange Committee, West Orange is a Special Place Committee and Providing Quality Services Without Busting the Budget Committee. Each of the committees has active, strong and organized chairs and vice chairs.
