WEST ORANGE 2000 CELEBRATION
COMMITTEE PLANS EVENTS

The West Orange 2000 Celebrates the New Millennium Committee is planning a series of events aimed at celebrating the new millennium. "Never before and never again will we have the opportunity to celebrate a new millennium," said Richard D.Trenk, West Orange Chair. "This is a great opportunity to plan a wide-ranging, inclusive and fun celebration," Trenk said.

Wendy Williams serves as Chair and Mary Scholl as Vice-Chair of the Celebration Committee. The Cultural Events Subcommittee, chaired by Karen Tarnoff, has been meeting throughout the summer and drafted an exciting series to not only lead up to and mark the new millenium but provide a permanent cultural presence throughout the Township. The Cultural Events Subcommittee includes the following active members: Mazie Blasi, Dr. Harold Littman, Larry Rogers, Denise Klein, and Ana Torres.

The Committee's goals are to restore a sense of community pride to West Orange, to establish West Orange as a culturally preeminent community, to leave a cultural legacy to West Orange residents in 21st Century, and to promote the establishment of a permanent West Orange Cultural Commission.

Some of the proposed cultural events include: Multi-cultural weekends; various concerts and recitals; a student tribute to "the Music of the Century"; a film festival; a tribute to famous residents; a major motion picture premier; a children's photo contest; Gala Evening 2000; history of West Orange book and exhibits; a Township Block Party; and a First Night celebration.

The West Orange 2000 Commission hopes to maintain a master calendar to keep track of all events planned by its various committees and hopefully all community organizations. Also, Committee Member Mazie Blasi proposed that the Township endorse its own official slogan "West Orange Township of Light".
